Unrest continues in London, England in what began as a peaceful protest on Saturday, August 9 against the police shooting of a 29-year-old man in the Tottenham area. The victim, Mark Duggan, was a father of four.
Rioters have looted and burned countless shops, causing widespread devastation and property damage. By Wednesday, 16 000 police officers will have been deployed to the streets in an attempt to gain control of the situation. Already, nearly 700 have been arrested, with 111 charged.
Many are now concerned about the city's security capabilities, as London is set to host the 2012 Olympic Games. Mayor Boris Johnson remains confident that the city can repair the damage, acknowledging that much time still remains to prepare.
Recent reports note that London has taken on a greater degree of calm, although violence has now erupted in several other cities, including Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Leicester and Birmingham.
